Tyler Watkins, Ed.D., is the principal of Petal High School, one of Mississippi’s top-rated high schools and a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School. He began his career in 2011 as a teacher and baseball coach before stepping into school leadership. His work centers on belonging, predictable systems, and stability-driven leadership. Dr. Watkins earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from William Carey University, where his research focused on the academic effects of student transiency. He lives in Petal with his wife, Katie, and their children, Lowe and Cohen.

The inspiration for Rooted Leadership in a Mobile World grew from years of serving students whose educational journeys were anything but predictable. As both a school leader and researcher, Dr. Watkins witnessed firsthand how frequent moves, unstable circumstances, and constant transitions affected students far beyond their academic performance. His doctoral research, combined with the daily experiences of welcoming new students while saying goodbye to others, revealed a simple but powerful truth: schools cannot control student mobility, but they can create environments where every student experiences belonging, consistency, and purpose from the moment they arrive.

Through this book, Dr. Watkins hopes educational leaders will rethink stability as something they intentionally create rather than something they simply inherit.
